Second Semester 2016
Course title: Nutrition Seminar
Objective: Familiarization of the candidates with the methods of presenting scientific seminars in the domestic and international science communities
Presenter: Department of Nutrition
Professor and head: Dr. Mohsen Nematy (Email: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.)
Time: Wednesdays, 12-2 AM, Classroom 13
Methods of presenting the seminar and preparing the slides: Title is up to the candidate.
Suggested Topics for Seminar Presentation:
1. Do you recommend gastric bypass surgery for a diabetic patient with hypertension, sleep apnea, grade III fatty liver (76% according to fibroscan) and BMI=60 kg/m2 as a treatment for grade I obesity?
Dr. Jami-al-Ahmadi
2. What nutrition style would you recommend for a 35-year-old male patient with burn injuries related to liquefied petroleum gas (75%) and albumin 2.1 on day five of hospitalization who has only received 10% of the food?
Dr. Javid
Evaluation of new references, published articles and creditable websites is necessary to provide the response to the seminar question. Duration of the Farsi and English 30 and 15 minutes, respectively. Maximum number of slides for the seminar in Farsi and English is 50 and 20, respectively. Slides must be prepared in a formal format, and seminar topics could be promoted by consulting the professors before preparation.
Total score would be calculated out of 20.
A) Lecture and presentation account for 12 points, as follows:
- Scientific content and originality (2 points)
- Selection of new and appropriate references (2 points)
- Quality of seminar presentation (organization, calmness, expression and clarity) (2 points)
- Providing suitable responses the questions posed in the seminar title (2 points)
- Quality and number of slides proportionate to the allocated time (1 point)
- Proper use of images, tables and other complementary items for better presentation (1 point)
- Responding to the questions after the seminar (2 points)
Tip: The final version of the presentation will be prepared after the seminar (2003 saved) and sent to the office of Ms. Fatemeh Firouzi.
Not observing this tip will lead to the reduction of 0.5 point.
B) Providing the seminar abstract in Farsi has 2 points;
C) Providing the seminar abstract in English has 2 points;
D) Providing a simplified pamphlet based on the study results for patients has 2 points.
The electronic file and hard copy of the English and Persian abstracts and the pamphlet must be sent to the office of Ms. Fatemeh Firouzi within two days before presenting the seminar (no need for reference to the professor). The abstracts will be corrected by the professor and returned to the students to observe the mistakes. After submitting the delivery date by the secretary of the department, delay per each day leads to the reduction of half a point from the total score. Presentation on the day of the seminar accounts for one point and no scores will be recorded after the seminar. Total correspondence between the abstracts and presented materials must be observed. Sending the files to the professors via email will reduce the score.
Hall coordination, invitation of all department members to the seminar and installing notices is upon the student, which could be done through the head of the department. Evidently, other students at different departments of the faculty could be properly informed on the seminars.
D) Persistent attendance and active participation in class discussions constitute 2 points. Unreasonable absence leads to course removal, and each session of absence reduces the total score by 0.5.
It should be noted that all the faculty members and students at the department will attend the seminar, and the question-and-answer sessions last for five minutes. Average score considered by the professors will be determined for the students.
