Overall Objective:
Familiarization of students with the nutrients needed for the health and disease prevention in the body
Specific Objectives:
By the end of this course, students must be able to:
1. Provide an overview of the nutritional sciences, as well as the importance of food and nutrients.
2. Define the divisions of nutrition.
3. Explain the metabolism of energy, imbalance and the food pyramid.
4. Explain the nutritional needs of pregnant women.
5. Explain the nutritional needs of infants during the lactation period.
6. Explain the nutritional needs of children, adolescents and the elderly.
7. Elaborate on the concept of food safety and the diseases transmitted through food.
8. Explain the role of nutrition in public hygiene and preventive dentistry.
9. Describe the food sources of carbohydrates, as well as their types and effects on health.
10. Define the sources of proteins and essential amino acids.
11. Define fats and essential fatty acids.
12. Explain the role of fats in health and diseases.
13. Elaborate on water-soluble vitamins, their common sources and role in health.
14. Elaborate on fat-soluble vitamins, their common sources and role in health.
