Majid Ghayour-Mobarhan is in charge of MASHAD (Mashhad Stroke Heart Atherosclerosis Disorder) Study, which is similar to Framingham and PROCAM Study.
MASHAD study is a 10-year cohort study that aims to evaluate the impact of various genetic, environmental, nutritional and psychosocial risk factors on the incidence of cardiovascular events among an urban population in eastern Iran. This project started in 2010 and will continue until 2020.
In the first phase of this project several results has been obtained. Some of them are as follow: The association of serum high-sensitivity C-reactive protein levels with the presence of obesity, diabetes mellitus and other cardiovascular risk factors has been studied. Hs-CRP has been considered as a biomarker in patients with metabolic syndrome. The prevalence of metabolic syndrome increases with Hs-CRP concentration in individuals without a history of cardiovascular diseases. Also, nutrient patterns and their relationship to metabolic syndrome have been investigated.
Majid also looked at other issue problem of Iran such as effects of vitamin D supplementation compared to placebo on different aspects of physical and mental health in high school girls in the Mashhad and Sabzevar cities of Iran. This current study is an interventional study that included adolescent girls, which were randomly selected by the use of clustering method, from Mashhad and Sabzevar cities.
