Dr. Abdolreza Norouzy, associate professor at the Department of Nutrition in MUMS, was appointed as the chairman of the Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition Society of Asia (PENSA) in 2015 in Japan. PENSA was initiated in 1995 in Thailand, with the collaborations of a group of physicians from Japan, China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Pakistan and Thailand. The purpose of the institution was to provide an opportunity for physicians and other active specialists in the field of the nutritional support of hospitalized patients, so that they would be able to communicate and exchange their scientific and clinical experiences. Since its foundation, PENSA has had outstanding progress; it consists of scientific and academic seminars for the individuals who are active in the field of nutritional support, held annually in different countries.
One of the major goals of PENSA is to facilitate research and development in the field of nutritional support in Asian countries, laying the grounds for the exchange of scientific and clinical experiences in nutritional support in line with the overall optimization of patient care, providing educational opportunities and raising the awareness of physicians regarding the importance of nutritional support in hospitalized patients, enhancing the interactions between international nutrition institutions, and performing related activities without political interference.
For the first time, the 17th Congress of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition Society of Asia (PENSA) (2016) was held during December 6-8, 2016 at the Olympic Hotel in Tehran, Iran, with the slogan of “Fighting Malnutrition in the Hospital”. The main goal of this festival was to emphasize the importance of proper nutrition in critically ill patients and necessity of nutritional support for patients admitted in the ICU in order to reduce the risk of malnutrition, disabilities and mortality.
