Schedule of Journal Club Education and Research Sessions in 2016-17 at the Department of Nutritional Sciences

(2016-2017)

Program manager: Dr. Asma Afshari

·         Sessions are held on the third Monday of every month

·         In each session of the journal club, one master's degree student and one PhD candidate present an article regarding one nutrition subject, which is overseen by a supervisor.

·         PhD candidates are in charge of supervising the performance, adjusting the slides, presentation of the master's degree student and preparing the critique of the article.

Agenda:

·         Critical evaluation of the articles

·         Presenting scientific-educational explanations regarding the selected subject

·         Justification of the necessity regarding the selected subject

·         Presenting the opinions and noting the shortcomings of the articles by the supervisor and other professors at the end of the session

·         Expert discussion with the participation of students and professors

Timing:

·         Duration of each presentation: 15 minutes

·         Duration of question-and-answer by professors and students for each article: 10 minutes Time of the session: 12-13

 

 

 

Important points:

·         Presence of all the professors, students and experts of the department is mandatory for these sessions. Absence is considered absenteeism (from work or education) and is included in department evaluations (professors and experts), final grades (master's degree students) and comprehensive exam (PhD candidates).

·         Educational scores will be allocated to the three first articles with the highest quality.

·         In case of interference with other programs at the department, the journal club sessions are prioritized.

·         Assessment of the professors regarding the presentations will be incorporated into the final grades in the theses of master's degree students and comprehensive test scores of PhD candidates.

·         Topic of the session and article is announced one week in advance (students are required to send the topic of their article and presentation to the head of the journal club one week in advance via email).

·         At the end of each session, students are required to send three documents to the educational and research expert of the department via email (original article, slides and practical abstract).
